Prosecutors ready to file charges against alleged Champion killers

According to authorities, at least five individuals allegedly connected to the hazing death of FAMU drum major Robert Champion will be arrested and charged. The state attorney for the Ninth Judicial District of Florida will announce details tomorrow.

Danielle Tavernier, a spokeswoman for the State Attorney Lawson Lamar (pictured), told reporters that the charges will range from misdemeanors to felonies.

No arrests have been made yet. Tavernier said that police in multiple Florida jurisdictions will assist with booking the suspects.

Champion died on Nov. 19 in Orlando as the result of injuries he sustained in a hazing incident that took place after the Florida Classic. The assault took place aboard a bus parked at the Rosen Plaza Hotel.

The Orlando County Sheriff’s Office completed its investigation in late March and turned its findings over to Lamar. Lamar has appointed Ken Lewis to serve as the lead prosecutor in the Champion case. Lewis is a veteran homicide trial lawyer.
